Huawei has long been a major player in the smartwatch industry, and the Huawei Watch D is a standout device with its advanced health-tracking features and unique design. This smartwatch is particularly notable for its ability to measure blood pressure accurately, setting it apart from most other wearables in the market. Below, we delve into its design, setup, operation, and health and fitness capabilities.
The Huawei Watch D features a rectangular casing made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, ensuring durability while keeping the watch lightweight. The display is covered by flat glass with no curvature, contributing to a sleek and modern aesthetic. On the right side, the watch has two buttons with solid pressure points; the lower button has an excellent fit, while the upper one has slight play.Huawei has incorporated a microphone under the buttons and on the opposite side. However, the Watch D lacks a speaker, meaning users cannot make or receive calls directly from the device. Despite this limitation, the build quality remains impressive, making it a solid choice for those prioritizing health tracking over communication features.
To set up and operate the Huawei Watch D, users must install the Huawei Health app. However, the current version of the app is not available on the Google Play Store. Instead, Huawei provides an APK download and recommends installation via its AppGallery. This process requires enabling installations from unknown sources in device settings, a minor inconvenience for Android users.Once installed, the setup process is straightforward. The Health app is central to software updates, watch settings, and notifications. The Huawei Watch D is compatible with both Android (from version 6.0) and iOS (from version 12), offering flexibility in connectivity.Users can customize the smartwatch’s settings both directly on the watch and through the app. Watchfaces can be downloaded from the integrated store, with some available for free and others requiring payment. Additionally, the watch's tiles, always-on display settings, and vibration strength can be adjusted. Unlike the Watch GT 3 Pro, the Watch D does not have an app store, meaning third-party apps cannot be installed.
The Huawei Watch D is a powerhouse for health tracking, with the Huawei Health app serving as the hub for all collected data. The watch monitors heart rate, sleep patterns, stress levels, SpO2 (blood oxygen levels), blood pressure, and overall activity.Huawei includes various fitness courses and training programs in the app, catering to different difficulty levels. Users can access free workouts or opt for a Huawei Health+ subscription for more advanced features. The Training tab organizes completed workouts by sport, allowing users to track progress effectively. One of the unique features is the Healthy Living section, which compiles activity goals like steps taken, stress management, breathing exercises, and sleep tracking. These metrics contribute to a daily assessment, with progress visually represented in colorful graphs.
The Watch D’s wristband is 30mm wide and features two layers: an outer fluoroelastomer layer and an inner fabric layer. Between these layers is the air chamber necessary for blood pressure measurements. However, the fabric lining can wrinkle depending on wear, potentially causing pressure points. The wristband has a quick-release fastener and is adjustable via fine grids. Two strap sizes are included, but due to the band’s specialized design and integrated pump function, no third-party replacements are available. Huawei only offers one band type.Weighing just under 41 grams without the band and approximately 91 grams with the large band, the Watch D is relatively lightweight, making it comfortable for daily wear.
The Huawei Watch D is an excellent choice for users who prioritize health tracking, particularly for blood pressure monitoring. While it lacks a built-in speaker and third-party app support, it excels in its core functionality. With a robust design, comprehensive health features, and compatibility with both Android and iOS, the Watch D is a compelling option for health-conscious smartwatch users.
